01 / THE TAYLOR FAMILY
Nettie Taylor.
A family’s Texas roots.
Daisi’s family account identifies Nettie Taylor as her great-grandmother and places her story within the Taylor family’s ranching and oil heritage in the Houston area. That heritage reaches back to Edward Ruthven Taylor and Ann George, whose shared life became a foundation for the generations that followed.
The family story describes Taylor and George building a life together in the face of racial barriers and restrictions on interracial marriage. Ann George’s experience of enslavement is part of that history, alongside the work of establishing a home and raising a family.
Daisi’s telling holds these difficulties alongside the family’s resilience. The names in the record represent people whose lives were shaped by their time, and whose decisions, labor, and relationships continued to influence their descendants.

A changing landscape.
A lasting connection.
Ranching and agriculture were central to the family’s connection with Texas. Over time, oil development brought another chapter to that relationship with the land, linking family property and mineral interests with the growth of the Houston region’s energy economy.
Daisi’s original account also connects this history with the Taylor-Stevenson Ranch and the agricultural traditions carried on by descendants. For her, the landscape holds more than an economic story: it holds the memory of daily work, family life, and the people who built their future there.

Jerome Aredell Williams.
Keeping the story alive.
Daisi’s great-grandfather, Jerome Aredell Williams, was a native of Goliad, Texas. His life and work connected agriculture, real estate, and community leadership in Houston. In her account, he was also active in the civic, religious, and professional life of the city’s Third Ward.
His enduring contribution to the family record was literary. In The Tin Box, Williams brought the world of Texas cattle and oil into a novel shaped by family, ambition, and inheritance. His writing gave later generations another way to encounter the places and experiences that formed their history.

Set against the world of Texas cattle and oil, The Tin Box follows a mystery of family secrets, betrayal, and disputed inheritance. Its fictional story carries themes that extend beyond the plot: what families pass down, what can be lost, and whose stories endure.
Daisi contributed an introduction, prologue, and preface to bring her great-grandfather’s work to another generation of readers. Revisiting the book connects her own storytelling with an earlier voice in the family—and gives that literary legacy a continuing place in her work.
